Over the years, people have asked how I’ve managed to navigate rare disease, cancer, transplant systems, research panels, and national advocacy work without completely unraveling. They assume there’s a hidden formula.
There isn’t.
If anything, my “secret sauce” is boring consistency—applied through systems thinking.
My background in IT shaped how I approach complex environments. In technology, you learn quickly that systems are rarely emotional. They are structured. They have decision trees, bottlenecks, redundancies, and failure modes. And healthcare is no different.
When you stop reacting emotionally to every obstacle and start mapping the system, everything changes. And the most important lesson I’ve learned is this, options are power.
Why Options Matter
In complex systems (especially healthcare) power often feels centralized, gatekeepers, policies, timelines, committees, reviews. It’s easy to feel cornered. But options shift our posture.
1. Options reduce panic.
2. Options reduce dependence on a single pathway.
3. Options create leverage.
4. Options buy time.
5 And options preserve dignity.
You don’t build options because you expect failure. You build options because resilience requires redundancy.
Systems Thinking in Practice
Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” I learned to ask, “What are my available paths from here?”
That shift changes everything.
Second opinions create perspective. Multiple centers create flexibility. Independent review creates clarity. Cross-organization relationships create visibility.
Each additional option reduces fear. Not because the situation disappears, but because you are no longer trapped inside one narrative.
Steadiness Beats Noise
When uncertainty or misunderstanding arise, people often increase their volume. I’ve found the opposite works better. And that’s to steady when others panic.
So I encourage you to learn the system instead of fighting shadows. Ask better questions. Protect your energy. Build bridges and do not make enemies. Learn to move with purpose and tact, not noise. These principles aren’t flashy nor are they dramatic. Rather they’re consistent. And consistency compounds.
What This Means Going Forward
The future of patient advocacy (and leadership in general) isn’t louder. It’s smarter. It’s structured. It’s collaborative.
The people who will shape better systems aren’t the ones who shout the most. They’re the ones who understand how the system works, and build more doors inside it.
